Overview

Categories organize Requests and define their submission forms. For example, a Bug reports category can ask for reproduction details, while a Feature Requests category can ask which problem the customer needs to solve.

Create a category for each main type of feedback, then configure its form, portal wording, and access rules.

Create a category

  1. Go to Settings → Requests → Management → Categories

  2. Click 'New category'

  3. Under Icon & name, choose an icon and enter the name (40 characters or fewer)

  4. Choose the category access and default Request visibility

  5. Click 'Create category'

A new category starts as Team only. Set Category access to Everyone or Selected segments when customers should see it. Reopen the category from the same list to configure its form and portal presentation.

Configure the submission form

Open the category and select 'Form'.

Add submission instructions

Use Submission instructions to tell customers what to include. Keep the guidance specific, such as the steps to reproduce a bug or the problem a proposed feature would solve. The instructions and the 'Portal' tab are available only while the category is open to customers.

Add and arrange fields

  1. Click 'Select existing fields' and choose a field from your library, or click 'Create new field'

  2. Add the fields this category needs

  3. Drag the field rows into the order customers should complete them

  4. Click 'Save changes'

Use a field's menu to remove it from this category. The form field guide explains field types, required answers, and who can see submitted values.

Note: When you create or edit a field inside the category, 'Apply to draft' stages the change. Save the category to keep it.

Manage category settings

Customize category wording

Open the category's 'Portal' tab and expand 'Category welcome text' to set its heading, description, and submit button text. Use these settings to explain what belongs in this category.

Click 'Reset to portal defaults' to remove the custom text for the selected language and use the Feedback Portal's default wording. The Portal tab also controls whether creation dates appear and whether the category asks Impact questions.

Tip: Use the language selector when managing feedback in multiple languages.

Allow or stop customer submissions

In the category's 'General' tab, turn 'Allow customer submissions' on or off, then click 'Save changes'.

Turning it off lets customers browse the Requests they can access while preventing them from creating new Requests in that category.

Edit or delete a category

Open a category to edit its settings and click 'Save changes'. If you close the editor with unsaved changes, Featurebase asks whether to save or discard them. To delete a category, use its menu in the category list and confirm 'Delete category'.

Important: Deleting a category permanently removes its Requests and comments and cannot be undone. Move Requests you want to keep into another category, for example with bulk editing, before deleting it.
