Migrating from Canny

Plan how your Canny feedback maps to Featurebase and move collection after checking the imported Requests.

Overview

Use Featurebase's CSV importer to bring Request data from a Canny export into your Workspace. Before importing, decide how the exported boards, statuses, and customer information should map to Featurebase.

The CSV importer transfers the fields you map. It does not transfer a complete Canny workspace or rebuild individual voter relationships from a vote total.

Migrate from Canny

1. Prepare your export

  1. Obtain a CSV export of the Canny Requests you want to move

  2. Keep an unchanged copy of the export

  3. Decide which Requests to retain and remove rows you do not want to import

  4. Review the available columns and identify the Request title, description, category, status, and author information

If comments, individual voters, or other records must move with the Requests, plan those separately before switching tools.

2. Map the exported data

Use the contents of your export to choose the mappings:

Data in your export

Featurebase destination

Request title

'Title (required)'

Request description

'Content'

Board

'Category'

Status

'Status', followed by a mapping to your Featurebase statuses

Vote total

'Upvotes'

Author name and email

'Author Name' and 'Author Email'

Tags

'Labels'

Creation date

'Created At'

Follow Importing feedback from other tools for the upload and mapping steps. Use the categories you want to maintain in Featurebase; they do not have to mirror every Canny board.

Tip: Column names can differ between exports. Check the preview values rather than relying on a matching label.

3. Check Requests and customer context

After importing, compare a sample of Requests with your saved export. Check the content, category, status, date, and author.

Check category access and Request visibility before sharing the portal.

Important: An imported vote total is a number only. It does not create identified customers who can receive updates, so do not plan customer follow-up around it.

4. Switch collection to Featurebase

Once you have checked the import and any separately migrated data:

  1. Finish Feedback Portal setup, including access and customer testing

  2. Install the Feedback widget if you collect feedback inside your product

  3. Replace feedback links in your product and website with the Featurebase destination

  4. Tell your team which tool to use for new feedback from the switch date
